If you are experiencing any of these symptoms along with your back pain, it’s time to skip the at home remedies and stretches and seek professional help. If you’re in need of a chiropractor to help alleviate back pain, schedule a consultation today!

Numbness or Tingling

Numbness and/or tingling is a sign of nerve irritation or damage, and it’s a type of pain that goes beyond your average back pain. It’s also clinically more significant because it’s usually a sign that something serious is going on — like a herniated disc. Herniated discs put pressure on your nerves and, if left untreated, can lead to permanent disabilities.

Fever

A fever is always cause for concern, especially if it lasts for several days! You may just have an achy back (and achy body) from the flu, but sometimes a fever along with back pain is a sign of something more serious, like an infection. Your primary care doctor can find out whether or not it is an infection, and you may be prescribed antibiotics.

Trauma

Often trauma, such as a serious fall or car accident, can cause back pain. Here at Revelation Chiropractic in Fort Collins, we treat patients all the time who are experiencing back pain from car accidents. If you’ve already been to a doctor and have ruled out serious problems like a fracture but are still experiencing pain, it may be time to see a chiropractor. We can help you manage your pain naturally, and chiropractic care is a great supplement to other care you’re receiving for your injuries.

Pain at Night

If you feel fine during the day but experience back pain in the middle of the night that wakes you up, it shouldn’t be ignored. It may be caused by disc degeneration, a sprain, or something more serious like a tumor. Your primary care doctor can order blood work or refer you to a specialist who can help identify the cause of your back pain.

History of Cancer

If you’re experiencing back pain and have a history of cancer, it’s important to see a doctor to rule out the possibility that cancer spread is causing your back pain. It may be that the pain is caused by something else and that it is able to be relieved with regular visits to a chiropractor, but it’s important to check just to be sure.

Foot Drop

Foot drop is the technical term for the need to consciously lift your foot higher to compensate for your foot dragging along the ground. It’s usually accompanied by back pain and a sign of a bigger issue, like damage to the nerve that tells the muscles to lift your foot. It can also be a sign of a muscle problem or a more serious neurological issue. Depending on the cause, foot drop can be treated with braces, physical therapy, nerve stimulation, or surgery.

Weight Loss

If you’re starting to exercise more or have made a change in your diet, weight loss is to be expected! And changes in your frequency and type of exercising can bring back pain, which a chiropractor like those at Revelations Chiropractic can help with. We can also teach you stretches to help alleviate pain between sessions. If, however, you’re experiencing unexpected weight loss along with back pain, you’ll want to visit a doctor to rule out infections or tumors as causes for the pain.

Prolonged Pain

Most back pain gets better with the proper care. That may mean regular visits to the chiropractor, adjusting your posture, or building habits that support the health of your central nervous system. If your back pain has lasted for more than six weeks, it’s important to seek professional help. Describe your symptoms to your doctor and they will most likely want to investigate whether there are more serious underlying causes to your pain, especially if it has been consistently severe over a long period of time.
