Backpacks, pencils, books, bus rides; it’s that time of year again! Getting to learn and grow at school is a huge blessing, but it also comes with extra pressure and stress your body has to deal with. Help your student make this school year their best yet with some of our top tips for Back-To-School health!
Backpack Hacks:
Always wear both shoulder straps when you carry your backpack. Putting all the weight on one shoulder creates tension and pulls your spine out of alignment, causing other parts of your body to compensate. If your bag comes with waist or shoulder buckles, use them! It helps distribute the weight across your body, putting less tension on your shoulders. It might take a few extra seconds in the morning, but it’s worth it.
Fun fact: Your backpack should weigh no more than 10% to 15% of your body weight when fully loaded. That means if you weigh 110 pounds, your backpack should weigh between 11 and 16 pounds. Have too many books that don’t make the cut? Try storing them in your locker or your desk; that’s what they’re for!
Reverse That Head-Forward Posture:
So many things we do every day have us looking down. Reading, texting, social media, and computer time make our necks strain forward, causing major stress to the muscles, vertebrae, and nerves. Since all life and health flows down from your brain through the nerves in your neck, keeping correct head and neck posture is critical for your health!
As you get back to books and computers this school year, how about adding just a couple new habits to start building healthy neck posture? Try stacking some books under your laptop so it’s eye level, and make sure to hold books, devices, and cell phones up higher so you don’t have to look down. Just a couple minutes a day of stretching out your neck can really help, too! A couple good stretches are to hang your head off the edge of your bed in the morning, or to put a towel behind your neck and stretch your head back comfortably for a few seconds, then come back to neutral and repeat. You can come into our office and ask us for more details if you need help!
Clear Up That Brain Fog!
Brain fog can be caused by a lot of things like improper diet, lack of sleep, and lack of exercise. But did you know that misalignments in your spine can also contribute to foggy thinking? Subluxations (misalignments) in your spine can block or reduce nerve signals from your brain to the rest of your body, resulting in sluggish thinking. When your chiropractor adjusts your spine, the nerves are free to communicate and you are free to learn and grow the way you were designed to!
You can make this school year the best one yet by keeping your student’s health and family a priority. Thank you for letting us at Revelation Chiropractic be a part of helping your family have an awesome back-to-school!
